Symptoms and Tests for Colon Cancer

These Symptoms And Tests Are Most Often Used To Diagnose Colon Cancer

Colon cancer is a common form of cancer, and having inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) can increase the lifetime risk of developing colon cancer. The symptoms of colon cancer and IBD can be quite similar. Therefore, it is important to always get a change in bowel habits or any other new or unusual symptoms checked out by a doctor.

Symptoms of Colon Cancer

In some cases, by the time symptoms or signs of colon cancer are apparent, the cancer has become advanced.

Even those people who have a low risk for colorectal cancer should have any of the following symptoms checked out by a doctor.

The symptoms of colorectal cancer include:

  • Change in bowel habits
  • Diarrhea, constipation, or feeling that the bowel does not empty completely
  • Bright red or very dark blood in the stool
  • Narrow stools
  • Gas pains, bloating, fullness, and cramps
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Vomiting

Screening Tests for Colon Cancer

Several tests may be used to diagnose colorectal cancer. In addition to a physical exam (which may include a digital rectal exam) and an evaluation of general medical history, several other tests may be performed.

Sigmoidoscopy. A sigmoidoscopy is a way for a doctor to examine the last one third of the large intestine, which includes the rectum and sigmoid colon. A flexible viewing tube with a lens and light source on the end, called a sigmoidoscope, is used.

Looking through the eyepiece at the other end of the scope, the doctor can see the inside of the colon. In this test, the doctor can check for cancer, abnormal growths (polyps) and ulcers. It is usually performed in the doctor's office, and can take 15-30 minutes. Beginning at age 50, a sigmoidoscopy is usually performed every 3 to 5 years to screen for colorectal cancer.

In people who are at a higher risk for colorectal cancer due to ulcerative colitis, family history of colorectal cancer, or familial polyposis, screening may be recommended starting at age 35.

Colonoscopy. A colonoscopy is a test to examine the inside of the colon, which can go beyond the areas a sigmoidoscopy can reach. This test uses a colonoscope, which is a flexible tube with lenses, a tiny TV camera and a light at the end. Through fiber-optic technology and a video computer chip, the colonoscope can scan the inside of the colon and transmit images to a video screen. An attachment at the end of the colonoscope may be used to take a biopsy of the tissue in the colon. If a polyp is found, it may be removed using a wire loop attachment on the colonoscope. Both biopsies and polyps will be sent to a laboratory for further testing. The colonoscopy procedure can take up to 1 1/2 hours and is performed in a hospital as an outpatient procedure. For colon cancer screening, a colonoscopy is recommended every 10 years after age 50 for people not at high risk.

Barium Enema A barium enema (also called a lower gastrointestinal series) is a special type of X-ray that uses barium sulfate and air to outline the lining of the rectum and colon.

Barium sulfate is a chalky chemical that shows up as white on X-ray film. The barium is given in an enema, which is then 'held' inside the colon while X-rays are taken. Intestinal abnormalities may appear as dark silhouettes or patterns along the intestinal lining on the X-ray. Air may be pumped into the colon to help sharpen the outline of the intestinal wall. A barium enema can be performed as an outpatient procedure, and usually takes about 45 minutes. The enema might be uncomfortable, but the X-rays are completely painless. A barium enema is used to check for polyps (abnormal growths on the intestinal lining), diverticulosis, tumors, or other abnormalities.

Beginning at age 50, a barium enema may be recommended once every 5 to 10 years instead of a colonoscopy for people not at high risk.

Biopsy. A biopsy is a sample of a small amount of tissue or cells that will be examined in a laboratory. During a colonoscopy, several biopsies (each at different locations in the colon and rectum) may be taken. They are commonly used to diagnose cancer or estimate how far cancer has spread. A biopsy is used to obtain bits of tissue to be checked in the laboratory for signs of cancer or other diseases. The biopsy sample is stained and examined under a microscope in the lab. This close examination can help the laboratory technician to determine if the sample is normal, part of a non-cancerous (benign) tumor, or a cancerous (malignant) tumor.

The Future Of Screening

For those who cringe at the thought of a colonoscopy, there is hope on the horizon. New tests are being developed, but don't use that as an excuse to skip out on the doctor. Keep those colonoscopy appointments! It's the best way to catch colon cancer early. Caught early, colon cancer is curable.

Wish I had done this sooner

June 27, 2006 Replaced the manual jack on 27ft Holiday I got from my parents about 5 years ago. What a great product! Simple installation and ... excellent performance. Now my right arm won't be bigger than my left from cranking.

March 28, 2013 Unit looks to be well made, have not tried it on the traileryet. when testing unit found one of the lights did not work. Removed ... the light cover to find that the bulb was not inserted in the socket. I was unable to get the bulb back into the socket.

April 11, 2013 the unit works fine as fare as lifting the trailer. It was easy to install, the only problem I had was one light didn't work it t ... urned out to be a defective light socket. they sent me a new socket but I didn't replace it . It would have been a difficult job needing to take the unit apart to wire thenew socket up. I will use it with only one light.

Jack it up

February 16, 2006 I used to have a manual jack. That was when my sons would go camping with us and they could provide the elbow grease required to ... jack the trailer up and down. Then they got older and didn't camp with us. I got the power jack. It is a beautiful thing. No problem lifting or lowering my trailer which has a 1000 lb tongue weight. Try doing that on a short weekend. Love the power jack.

Basic and functional jack.

January 02, 2007 Good jack -- for the price. Noisy but basic and functional ... most of the time. The up/down switch was cheaply made with a plas ... tic switch lever which finally broke. It's within warrenty but I'll just replace the switch with a DPDT toggle switch from Radio Shack that has a more reliable metal toggle lever. These jacks also have poor fit/finish issues with the paint and external wiring which is typical of cheaply made Chinese goods using outdated manufacturing techniques. However, it seems to be mechanically sound so far.

Great Tongue Jack

March 03, 2011 Just got it, it works fine and for those of you who say can't use manual handle with propane tanks near it, it now comes with a 9/ ... 16 socket so you can uase a ratchet. Also came with a nice waterproof cover,so I would say all previous complaints have been solved.

Enough with the aerobics.

April 10, 2006 I got my previous electric jack from Camping world and had transferred it to other new travel trailers over the last 15 years. Wh ... en I got the camper out this spring, the jack had finally died. I thought I'd try to get along without it for awhile. Just a couple of times up, then down cured me of that thought. I placed an order almost immediately. Easy installation and it's just like the old one, except a little noiser. I'll live with that.

3000 lb. jack

February 17, 2012 I bought this jack in April 2008. Installed easy. The only problem i had was it got wet inside the motor and stopped working. Bein ... g able to do this myself, I took it apart, used CRC electrical film cleaner and sealer on all elec.parts. It worked fine after that, and to this day. Mine did not come with a cover, still don't have one don't need it . It did come with a crank for manual use. I did cut it in half welded extension to it to clear tanks. I would recomend this to everyone. 4 stars because of electrial. I do know they have improved now. Would recommend to all.

Best thing ever

June 15, 2006 I installed the 3000lb Tongue Jack on my 35ft Cherokee 29z, I was so tired of cranking the handle up and down... Was so very easy ... to install took about 20 minutes 3 Bolts and a splice of the fuse wire, What a breeze, maybe my boss could even do it. The 2 lights were a added deal for night time hook up. Well worth the money!! Now my 11 year old wants to help

Power jack

October 10, 2005 I camped one night without a power jack on my new 2005 Jay Feather 26S. Never again. I went home and ordered one. This is the o ... ne I bought and it has paid for itself several times. Worth every dollar and I paid a little more for mine. The lights on each side of the jack pedestal provide light at night for jacking and leveling the trailer. Installation was about 15 minutes and required no drilling, only a crescent, socket, or open end wrench. Power connection to battery was simple too. I love it. My brother bought one after seeing mine.

Works well

August 23, 2006 I install this Jack after our trip to Camping World in Churchville NY. The lock washers got misshaped being pulled into the slotte ... d holes on jack, wished it came with flat washers. Since then I also added a ground wire, and installed flat washers. Unit is noisey but it works well

REMEDY FOR SWITCH PROBLEM

April 23, 2007 I spoke with MARV @ Ultra Fab - in Elkhardt, In (574) 294-7571. He informed me that the switch manufacturer made some of the swit ... ches with steel rods inside the plastic cover and some without. His company is more than willing to send either a new switch that the end user may replace if they are so able - or - he will ship a new jack along with a prepaid return lable for the return shipping. It was so nice speaking with a mfg rep that is interested in his customers satisfaction. A specila thanks to "Kate" @ CampingWorld in Amsterdam, NY for all her assistance and time.

Ultra 3002 Electric Jongue Jack

April 10, 2011 This was only size available to fit my camper. Installation: Did not include Fuse 30amp slow blow and had to read motor exploded ... view to find that out. So don't forget to buy a fuse. The lights are on the side and are not useful for night use. You also need elect. connectors to attach to battery. It does include the socket but you will need to have a 3/8th ratchet to use their socket. The cover bag would help if it was water proof. It's not. A trash can will work. After reading some of the information before i did buy this I also purchased a Two year repair (18.99). It was easy to attach were hand jack was. You just need a car jack and/or blocks to hold it up until installed. The elect. part was not hard to install the box just did not let you know what you needed to buy or bring. Using the jack could be a lot easier if it was marked UP/DOWN. The switch is under the the motor head bottom. Toggle switch moved four ways. Works Two. Switch to front is up back is down. Light switch is on the back and hard to find. Hope it will last the 2-years...

Stop wasting time... BUY this JACK

March 30, 2006 Please do not repeat my mistake. I researched electric tongue jacks for 5+ months while I wore myself out hand cranking. I needed ... to find an affordable, reliable, easy to use, & most of all easy to install electric jack. This jack met all my criteria, but I continue to hesitate for 2 more months because I was unsure about the installation. I finally bought the jack & I installed it in less than 1 hour. 3 bolts + 1 wire THAT's ALL !!!

Works for me

November 25, 2009 I purchased this last week and installed it several days ago and have used it twice as we are traveling. I was able to install it ... in less than 20 minutes. It works great and the light is a big plus. Make sure you have electricians tape on hand or large wire nuts. So far impressed.

Power tongue jack

March 24, 2006 Last year, after arriving at various campgrounds, and jacking the tongue to stabilize or take off somewhere with the truck. this y ... ear I wanted something better. I checked locally, and found the same power tongue jack costing over $300. I guess I cheated when I installed it. I just hooked up my trailer to the truck, removed three bolts, took out the old manual jack, placed the new one in, put the same bolts back in, and ran the hot wire to the battery. From the time I went outside to start this "project", and ended with the truck back being parked, took only 30 minutes. It works so simply and easily. Kent Johnston Hayden, Idaho

What a life saver!

February 28, 2009 I am a female who often sets up the RV alone. I find it very difficult to hand crank the RV. After 3 years of complaining about ... how painful it was for me to hand crank (Rheumatoid Arthritis), my children bought me this jack for Christmas a few years ago. It has worked perfectly for two seasons. I am considering trading in my current RV for a new one and this jack will be staying with me to be put on the new one!

Good Jack, Good Price

October 08, 2007 I've been using the manual crank on our 26' trailer for two years now. Bought and installed this new electric jack last week ... end on a whim. Very easy to install (about 20 minutes) and it works great. It makes hooking up the spring bars on the hitch a breeze. Saves time and alot of my energy. Ive had no problem with the switch, seems solid. And in my opinion, not excessively noisy. I'm very happy with this jack. Don't know why I procrastenated so long.

Much better than cranking!!!!

September 02, 2006 I installed this baby very easily and it took 20 to 30 minutes and most of the hard part was getting the old nuts off the old one. ... I hated cranking my trailer up and down because my old jack was difficult to crank and broke and couple of times. I just took my rig out this past week and it was just a joy to just push a button and take the rig off the truck and levelling was a breeze. One thing I don't like about this baby is that it labors a lot picking up my rig. I really thought that 3000lbs would be enough since that is all the old jack was rated at but it might be better to go to the 3500lbs version if you have a bigger trailer. I must say even if this thing breaks it is worth it in my book. I would buy another higher powered one if I have to buy another one.

It might be slow, but it beats crankin

June 08, 2009 Well, was a bit surprised by how small this actually was, but figured it's worth the try. Have read many other reviews and many ... had issues straight out of the box. But figured that wouldn't happen to me. I was wrong. Mounted the jack, and wanted to make sure it worked before completing the install so routed the power cable and attached it to the positive side of that battery, Lights work, good sign, hit the switch to activate motor, nothing. Didn't take long to find the problem. The wire from the motor wasn't attached to the inline fuse mounted to the motor, Sure it was attached with the rubber coating, but it wasn't soldered to the connector. Also, the wire is 10gauge, the connector was 16 gauge, had to replace the terminal lug and resolder. All is fine now but a bit upset at first. It does work, like the title, it is slow, but beats crankin. For the money, it's a pretty good deal. Now if you have a heavy rig, would opt for the bigger unit, not sure if it's any faster, but it may also have a longer lift range. I have to stack a number of blocks under it in order to clear the ball on my hitch. That does help in the speed department since it doesn't have to travel as far. Something to keep in mind. Did I contact customer service, No, figured since it was a fixable repair, no need to if after connecting the wire, still had issues, then it would've gone back and the way it's repaired you wouldn't have known it was touched. Would I purchase it again, Yep, it does what it set out to do can't ask for more than that.

Whew! No-Sweat Up/Down Hitching...

June 24, 2007 I'm new to trailers (RVs). I figured a few minutes of cranking wasn't bad, certainly NOT worth $200 for a power tongue-jack. Wel ... l, it's hitting near/over 100 now in UT, and even in 'dry' weather, that's HOT!!! Being dripping wet when you've finished a day's trip, or preparing for another, wears on you fast! I have better things to do with my time & energy (Down Bear, Sugar be good! Moans & groans from the audience.) I bought this jack today, and found out it was on SALE! Yay! :-) Installation is a BREEZE! It took 15 minutes to use a scissor-jack to crank the tongue up by a few inches, and replace the manual torture-tongue-jack. The most difficult part is 'working' this new jack through the tongue's tight lower opening (this sounds like porn!). HINT: Just work it back & forth (wobble, left-to right) GENTLY, to 'scrape off' the painted coating until it is seated onto the trailer's tongue. Protect with Krylon or another good spray-paint. A quick snip & tuck of the single (Positive) wire, to the battery's positive lead, and a few zip-ties, and installation is DONE! Some complain that the motor is loud. Compare that to the huff & puff of your cranking that manual jack. How loud do you cuss when you're off ;-) Now a simple toggle front (up) or back (down) is all it takes! Heck, it's a small 3x3 high-torque motor, lifting up to 3k pounds! You would whine too! ;-) I can't speak to the quality of the toggle-switch,as mine is new... I suspect that if you don't exert he-man force on it, it should hold up well. Remember: It won't go faster if you push harder on it! If it gives out, go to Radio-Shack and pick up a he-man, take that!, toggle switch for a few $$, and exert your he-manness out on it ;-) I am pleased with this jack, and I doubt I will ever regret buying it!

June 27, 2007 We went over a year, manually cranking our trailer up and down. It is a toy hauler that usually has 3 or 4 quads in the back, plu ... s we free-stand so the water tanks are full when we arrive. Translation: it is really a TON of weight to crank by hand! We picked this jack up at the newest location, across the river from Louisville, Ky and found it so easy to install. We have been more than pleased with it and anticipate using it for a long time to come. We have had no problems with the toggle switch and don't know that the night light is a necessity, but it never hurts, I guess. It handles our trailer with ease and, though my husband doesn't care, it looks very nice on the front of our unit.

Incredible customer service

August 30, 2007 I bought this jack from the Tacoma area Camping World store while on holidays in June. Shortly after I installed it, the motor ... seemed to develop a dead spot and would only work again after I used the emergency crank to rotate the motor half a turn. As I live in Canada, it would have been about an eight hour drive to return the jack at the store, so I called Ultra-fab directly and talked to their customer service representative. After describing the problem to him, he told me a replacement would be there within two weeks.. I was a little sceptical about that, but when the replacement was on my doorstep just over a week later, I was amazed. This is clearly a company that cares about customer satisfaction, and is willing to stand behind their products. It certainly has given me the reassurance to purchase from them in the future.

Decent "CHEAPER MADE" jack. Decent lift speed, wobbly jack.

August 29, 2017 Replaced damaged unit. Chose this one as a replacement mainly because of cost while on a trip. Unit lift speed outshines my old un ... it but wobble leads me to believe I'll be replacing in a year or two. This is a basic unit and does the job just not sure loose tolerances will hold up in the long run. Have not used to hook up to truck yet but lift capacity for the trailer is adequate to raise my unit. Should be able to lift back of truck suspension to hook up stabilizer bars. Will definitely have to use all four stabilizer jacks to solidify stance of set up trailer for camping. Would buy more expensive better made unit if doing it again. Do yourself a favor spend the little bit extra to a more stable stance on trailer without using stabilizer jacks. I usually don't use at home, but will have to start.

Pros: Extremely easy installation, Reasonably priced

3000 lb Tongue Jack

November 28, 2007 Very easy to install and it makes setting up the trailer so much easier than using the hand crank. Have only had it a week and ... no problems with it, as yet.

Great Jack

August 01, 2008 got one of these for my birthday from my kids. Works great. You just have to learn to use it. If you drop the foot down too many ... holes it will not come up high enough to sit on hitch. First time I used it i had to reblock but its great now.

JACK HAS PERFORMED GREAT!

August 16, 2008 I purchased this jack because I have a heart condition which makes it difficult for me to turn a hand crank jack. I installed ... it in about 20 minutes with no problem. I have used it many times on my camping trailer with no problems. That being said, my trailer only has a 450LB tounge weight but I have used it to slightly lift the back of my truck to make hook up of the weight distibuting hitch easy! Again no problems! It does come with a hand crank for emergency use but I have never had to use it, but it's a nice safety feature to have just in case a problem does present itself. I know the jack is not going to win any beauty awards but the wrinkle finish black spray coating has been durable even in the Texas sun. I was a little surprised to see the negative comments about this jack, but who knows maybe they had a bad batch of them get out?

Undecided

June 06, 2012 I purchased this over a month ago. My son is in town this week and installed it for me today, very easy and straight forward. I sh ... ould have opened the box as soon as it arrived and compared it to the standard tong jack. My old one is a 2 1/2 inch and this is a 2 inch. Had I noticed that then I would have returned it. It will probably work just fine but we will have to test it to see, I just couldn't use the flip foot that we had installed on the old one because it's for the 2 1/2 inch and won't fit.

Amazing customer service

June 09, 2011 I had received this item as a gift last year, and encountered a minor malfunction which caused the main post to spin in addition t ... o raising and lowering. I went to the manufacturer's website, and told them as much. THE NEXT DAY, I received a phone call to help me troubleshoot the problem. I was determined that the problem was not an easy fix I could perform myself, so within 5 minutes, I was told they would ship a replacement to me, free of charge, shipping to be completely paid by ultra-fab. I was duly impressed, and despite the original problem (reason for only 4 stars), and the fact that I am unsure if this original problem will crop up again, I would buy from this manufacturer again, due to their superior customer service commitment.

Very Good Jack, Excellent Customer Service

April 15, 2009 I recieved this jack as a Christmas gift in 2007 (thanks to my wife & her parents) and it has been one of the best upgrades we hav ... e made to our trailer. It makes hitching up so much easier since you can easily raise up the back of the truck to take away the stress of attaching the load bars. Installation takes about an hour. I did have some initial quality issues with mine but the company that makes it, Ultra-Fab Products, went way above the norm to make me a satisfied customer. They sent me the next model up (the 3500) and gave me me a free cover. I would recommend it...

Agree with Rebel Dave

March 27, 2011 Ours worked great (just sold trailer for fifth wheel and this added to the resale value!). No problems with install or operation ... s. Will really pays off during un-hitching folks. We had many campside mates ask about it and we always give it A+ ratings.

Good Jack, Great Customer Service

May 10, 2011 I have had the 3002 model Jack for 2 years on a Toy Hauler. It gets used 1-2 times a month. The Jack failed recently and became ... detached from the motor. The Company sent me some shear pins but that ended up not being the problem. The Company then sent me a new jack free and paid to return the old one. The jack got heavy use and it's good to know if you have a problem the Company stands behind their product.

3000 lb Tongue Jack

March 04, 2011 Bought this at Camping World here in St. Augustine, Fl. Took me 45 min' to install it. Sure it runs a lil' slow. beats having to ... crank the jack up or down. I think it is a great product so far. The cover pouch that came with it is a great idea for the water situation. The socket is a good idea also. If you need to use it. Just put an extion on your socket and ratchet and go with it. Like I said, so far no trouble.

Great product, minor issue but resulted in excellent customer service from Ultra Fab

September 01, 2011 I purchased this jack in October 2010 for my 2006 Jayco 31BHS and installed it in the parking lot of the Chattanooga Camping World ... . I was on my way to camp at a park in Chattanooga and after getting exhausted on previous trips because of the manual crank jack, Having it has made set up and break down so much easier which reduces the stress of what's supposed to be a relaxing trip. On my last trip a few weeks ago, upon returning home and disconnecting from my truck hitch, during the jack operation I noticed small metal shavings coming from the shaft underneath the tongue. The shavings were landing on the jack foot plate and were very noticable. The jack also skipped a few times on it's way down, usually 1/4 inch drop each time. Figuring this was a gear or motor issue I was hoping I still had my original receipt. I found my receipt from October 2010 and called Camping World who referred me to Ultra Fab to have the under covered under the 1 year manufacturer warranty. I spoke to a nice lady at Ultra Fab who tranferred me to Marv. I explained what was happening and Marv said it was definitely a warranty issue and shipped a new jack to me with 2 day shipping. They covered shipping the new unit to me and the shipping of the defective unit back to their warehouse. Ultra Fab stands behind their products and makes sure to address issues to the best of their ability to ensure the customer remains satisfied with their purchase.

Easy Installation, After Trips to Buy Parts

April 09, 2014 4 Stars instead of 5 because you have to make a trip to hardware store to purchase extra wire and attachment for your battery. ( ... Why the manufacturer didn't include these in the kit is baffling to me, as an engineer.) You'll also want a few long zip-ties to secure the wire to your frame and you'll want to wrap up your splices in lots of electrical tape to keep the water out.

Good product

August 29, 2012 I installed this jack as soon as I received it. In doing so, I placed it on the bottom of the frame in order to gain more height. ... Unfortunately, when I turned onto a road with a deep dip, it bent the mount. I changed its position to the top of the frame to correct the problem, and still have plenty of lift. The jack is sturdy and does a great job. I would recommend it to anyone.

Tongue jack

March 05, 2016 We went camping and our crank up jack broke. We hopped in the truck and went to the closest Camping World store. We picked out thi ... s Tongue Jack because it supposedly had the most features. We put the 1st one on and seemed to work decent. We didn't use the Camper very much that year, but when we went to jack it up to move it, I let it retract too much. This jack is supposed to shut down if overloaded and it does not. The jack tube fell down to the ground and I had to bungee it up to the tongue because it was already hitched. I got another one under warranty and put it on in my backyard. I just went out to check it and it quit working. I checked all the connections, battery, even ran a direct ground to it and it wouldn't work. The lights on it work but the jack doesn't.

Pros: Jack is loud and the jacking tube is 1/2

Some problems encountered with the product

May 17, 2012 Out of the box the motor housing screws had all come loose because they were too short, and the housing was separated. This caus ... ed the wire connections to come undone and they needed to be reconnected and tightened. There was no Boot Snap Seal, so the switch is still unprotected. Once all of this was corrected (I supplied my own screws to attach the housing) the installation was very simple. The Jack works well and I am happy with performance.

Just installed it today

June 03, 2012 I bought this tongue jack a couple of weeks ago, and just had a chance to install it today. Installation was simple, anyone with a ... bit of DIY knowledgecando it in a snap. The kit did not come with everything you need though, that's why only 4 stars, and I've not used it on a trip yet. You will need a means of connecting the in-line fuse holder to the battery + terminal, I used a crimp on ring terminal ( yellow for #10 wire), and a #10 butt splice to connect the other side of the inline fuse holder to the motor on the jack. It runs great, lifts the tongue on my Coachmen Cascade like a breeze. Excellent value for the price!
